Murphy Radio Model U472 From 1958

Shown above is the model U472, a set measuring only 14”x 8 1/2”x 6 1/2”. This receiver is presented in a dark green bakelite cabinet, the first time that particular colour had been used by Murphy. Particularly noticeable are the vertical Perspex bars at the front of the cabinet that protect the speaker cloth. This particular design feature had been popular a few years back, used for example in the Philips model 310A and 141U from 1952 and 1954 respectively, (although in the both the Philips examples the Perspex columns had the effect of illuminating and hence creating a sunrise effect). The bars do not illuminate in the Murphy U472, but are prone to damage, as the Perspex is rather brittle and hence examples are often seen with one or more uprights missing. Valve line up is 10L14, 10C14, 10F18, 10LD12, 10P18, U381.
